It is rated as a "walk up" and considered to be one of the easier fourteeners to climb. Uncompahgre means "hot water spring" in the Ute Indian language, suggesting volcanic origins. According to GNIS (Geographic Names Information System), the mountain was named after the Uncompahgre River.
