• This jigsaw is based on the Hobo Dyer Projection. Although the shapes of land and sea over the globe are virtually unchanging in the short term, different map projections portray very contrasting visual images of these shapes. No flat map can be a perfect representation of the globe; its flatness alone causes breaks or distortions, as anyone who has peeled an orange and tried to lay the peel flat will know. This map is not only upside down from our normal view, but it is also drawn so that all countries are the correct size in relation to one another - what is called "equal area". That enables true comparisons to be made anywhere on the map. At the same time it shows the lines of latitude and longitude as a rectangular grid, thus ensuring that north-south lines are always at right angles to east-west lines, as they are on the globe. To achieve this, the true shapes of the land masses cannot be preserved all over the map. North and south of about 45 degrees they become progressively flattened, but the rest of the map preserves good shape.
