• With a maximum-recorded depth of 25 feet, Portage Lake is one of the two shallowest lakes in the Fish River chain of lakes. At 2,474 acres, this moderately sized water body receives ample use by various outdoor recreation enthusiast. Development on Portage Lake is considered heavy and it includes seasonal as well as year-round residences. A public boat landing and beach is available in the town of Portage. Since 2001, the lake has been marked with navigational buoys by the Portage Lake Association. Due to its shallow average depth, Portage does not separate into warm and cold layers. In fact, the water temperatures are about equal at all depths during the warm summer months. As a result, the water quality conditions are considered marginal for cold-water game fish. However, efforts continue to emphasize the management of Portage Lake as a salmon and brook trout lake. Spawning and nursery areas are available for salmon in both the Fish River inlet and outlet. Natural reproduction is occasionally supplemented with hatchery salmon. Adequate brook trout spawning and nursery areas are also present. Warm-water fish such as suckers, fallfish, and yellow perch are abundant in Portage Lake, taking advantage of the extensive shallow areas. These fish thrive in the large area of very shallow water and these species also limit the brook trout and salmon reproduction by competing for food and space. Portage is a popular destination for numerous outdoor enthusiasts. During the winter months, snowmobile trail riding and ice fishing are popular activities and in the summer, boating, fishing, and swimming provide the bulk of activity. The area is also a popular outpost in the fall for moose, deer, and bear hunting. The illegal stocking of waters by people moving fish to where they think they ought to be can create a long-term biological problem that may be permanent, often ruining traditional or native fish balances. Fines up to $10,000 are possible for the illegal introduction of fish into Maines waterways. Please help stop the illegal introduction of fish, including bait fish.
