- Pikes Peak is one of the most famous and easily accessible high mountains found in the American West. It is an isolated Fourteener, perched alone at the southern end of the Front Range where a paved highway and a cog railway deliver visitors to its summit. It was here, some 8,000 feet above the city of Colorado Springs, that Katharine Lee Bates wrote "America the Beautiful," penning the phrase "purple mountain majesties" for the first time. This view from the north highlights portions of the drive up to the summit along with the subsidiary mountains that rise to the south of Pikes Peak. Elevations are shown in feet.
