- Old Hickory Lake was formed in 1954 with the completion of the Old Hickory Dam, a project overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers, who maintain the reservoir. The dam’s power station provides the region with electricity. Though water levels fluctuate somewhat, they are more stable than those of most other Tennessee reservoirs. This consistency, combined with a strong forage base, makes Old Hickory well-suited to fishing and other recreation. A 2010 flood raised questions about the population of gamefish, but current numbers and reproduction rates are looking very good. Though lake is a noted largemouth bass and crappie fishery, it is also one of the premier striped bass lakes in the nation. Other popular fish include catfish, sauger, white bass, bluegill and walleye. In fact, the world record walleye, a 25-pound, 41-inch fish, was caught on Old Hickory in 1960.
