- Franko's fish cards are stiff, laminated plastic, with a hole for a lanyard. Take it snorkeling or scuba diving with you! Ambergris Caye (pronounced Am - BEAR – grease Cay) is a fabulous Caribbean island with wonderful diving and snorkeling. It is located at the northern end of the Belize Barrier Reef. Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, and the main destination for travelers to this English-speaking western Caribbean country formerly called British Honduras. As you can see on the mini-map, San Pedro is the only town on the island. Ambergris Caye has been the hub of Belizean maritime fishing trade for centuries, but in the last few decades scuba and eco tourism have become the main products of Ambergris Caye. This fish card serves as a guide to the island, giving you not only a little map, but a guide to all of the potential diving you can do there along the Belize Barrier Reef. It also happens that there is a rich variety of things to do in San Pedro Town, which is why Ambergris Caye is referred to as the gateway to Belize. The location of 40 scuba dive sites are shown on the map. My favorite is “Franco Canyon” From north to south they include: Bacalar, Chico Canyons, Ises Bowl, Franco Canyon, Rocky Point Canyons, Robles Canyons, Tortuga Canyons, Basil Jones Canyons, Basil Jones Cut, Punta Azul Canyons, Palmero Canyon #2, Palmero Canyon #1, Palmero Cut, Santa Rita Canyons, Mexico Canyons, Mexico Tunnels, Mexico Rocks, Mexico Cut, Catalan Rocks, Mata Canyons, Punta Arena Canyons, Pescador Canyons, Pescador Tunnels, Buena Vista Canyons, Caoba Canyons, Tres Cocos Canyons, Tres Cocos Cut, Paradise Canyons, Tackle Box Canyons, Toffee (Tuffy) Cut, Toffee (Tuffy) Canyons, Entrada, San Pedro Cut, Dardanellos Cut, Dos Cocos Canyons, Victoria Canyons, Cypress Canyons, Cypress Tunnels, Boca Chica Canyon, Hol Chan Canyons, Hol Chan Cut, and Shark-Ray Alley. Five of these sites are noted as good snorkeling spots as well. At the south end you wind two marine reserves called Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark-Ray Alley Marine Reserve. At the north end you are in neighboring Mexico. The extensive Belize Barrier Reef can be seen just offshore in the Caribbean Sea. To the west of the island is the incredibly turquoise Chetumal Bay, which extends northward into Mexican waters. Side two of Franko’s Ambergris Caye Fish Card shows 100 plus typical Caribbean reef creatures that hang out in Ambergris Caye’s warm waters. They include butterflyfishes, wrasses, damselfishes, parrot fishes, grunts, snappers, rays, sharks and trunkfishes. A sampling of tropical Caribbean invertebrates of Ambergris Caye are shown too, including the lobster, coral crab, black sea cucumber, and cushion sea star, corals and sponges.
