California’s coast is faced with an almost unbroken series of ranges, separated from the Sierra Nevada by the remarkably flat Central Valley.  Mt. Shasta and the Modoc Plateau dominate northeastern California. The Mojave Desert of the southeast is a vast region of wide basins and low but rugged ridges, bordered on the south by the Transverse Ranges, and on the north by the southern ranges of the Basin and Range province that occupies nearly the whole of Nevada.
