The Aberdare National Park is a unique volcanic range. There are two main peaks, Ol Doinyo Le Satima(4001 m) and Kinangop. The peaks are separated by a long col of alphine moorland which ranges over 3000 m.
The Aberdare forest is an important water catchment area.
The park is a site of great scenic, historical and cultural significance. It served as operation base for the Mau Mau freedom fighters during the struggle for Kenya’s Independence.
The park has a long association with the United Kingdom’s Royal Family , Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne while spending a night at the Treetops Hotel in 1952.
The park is home to most of the larger mammals, such as the Black Rhino. The park is home to the rare Bongo and Giant Forest Hog.
