• This is perhaps the very first non-US Governmental map of the United States in any language which features the "Gulf of America" toponym.

  “Guide Map of United States of America” is part of a series of regional and country maps produced by Iran's leading independent map publisher, Gitashenasi. Intended primarily for a domestic audience, the map is published in Persian. This map clearly highlights all 50 USA states, over 1000 cities, and all main highways/railways, rivers and water bodies. Adjacent areas of Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Bahamas are also shown.

  Looking at it closely, we can see that an inset of the state of Alaska is placed right over the Gulf in a way that almost splits it into two. That is because the label underneath the continental U.S. reads "Gulf of America", whereas the label to the right of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas is the still the familiar "Gulf of Mexico" — a clever and inventive way to show the Gulf's now multiple names.
