  • The name change of Kazakshtan’s capital city from Nur-Sultan to Astana. The name of the capital had changed from Astana to Nur-Sultan in 2019, to honor Nursultan Nazarbayev, the outgoing Kazakh president who had served in that role for three decades.
  Unrest in the country in 2022 prompted the Kazakh parliament to reinstate the former name.
  • The addition of a second capital symbol in Indonesia for the city of Nusantara. Nusantara is scheduled to become the official Indonesian capital.
  • The addition of the place name for the world’s newest desert, the Aralkum Desert. The Aralkum lies in the lake bed of what once was the Aral Sea.
